Monologue Character Building
When my character, Megan's monologue occurs, she is attempting to talk her teacher out of giving her detention. The reason Megan is being given detention in the first place is because she was talking too much during class. The detention is going to be in the library, which is a place where being quiet is required, making it a fitting punishment for a talker. During the monologue, it is mentioned that Megan's dad yells at her for talking so much, which may suggest that her family finds her annoying as well. It also show that there may be a strained family relationship, as her dad is resorting to yelling rather than simply ignoring her or asking to stop in a gentler way. The character does not seem to talk because she dislikes school, though. This is shown through her mentioning that she finds the subject material very interesting and that the reason she talks so much in class is because she wants to discuss it further. This makes it appear as though Megan is generally a good student, talking aside. I feel that this character is probably in middle school, because the speaking style has a sort of guileless tone to it. The voice of the speaker sounds fairly young to me, and not the way a high schooler might talk. Megan is definitely an extrovert, with lots of friends and high energy.
Megan’s teacher is generally a patient person, but this was Megan’s third time having to be talked to about her nonstop chatter. In her classroom, Megan is very friendly and social, so she tends to consider everyone her friend. Because of this, Megan's classmates don't mind her talking all the time, even though,at times, it distracts them from what the teacher says. The classroom is a place that the students don't mind being because the teacher has an enjoyable teaching style. While Megan is talking, the teacher tries to stop her, but is unable to. At the end, Megan is given one more chance because the teacher is a kind person. The reason Megan is trying to get out of detention is because she will get into huge trouble at home if she has it. Her parents expect a lot from her and she tries to live up to their expectations even though they can be a bit harsh at times.
