Hello to Goodbye: A Semester of Learning

This past semester in acting class, I learned a lot about different kinds of acting. I definitely feel that what I got out of this class falls in line with what I was hoping to learn and improve on. I’ve gained more confidence when it comes to acting and in general. At the beginning of the semester, I learned about how to better project my voice, which is a skill that’s useful in many situations, including public speaking. Next I got the chance to learn about memorization and expressions through the monologues. The first one, which was dramatic, was easier for me because it had not too much movement and was just more in my comfort zone. Meanwhile, the second monologue, which was a comedy piece, was much more difficult because I had to pretend to be basically the opposite of my usual personality. This was more challenging than I expected, but it taught me about overacting, which I felt helped a lot. After monologues, we began doing silent movie work. This was my favorite unit because i...

Scene Work Reflection

So far during our scene Work, we’ve made a lot of progress. I believe all three of us have improved a lot with the expression in our voices. The progression from calm to annoyed angry seems natural for the personality of the characters we are playing. When we first began working on this scene, I feel that we went through it much too quickly and that the transition between the different emotioned we were portraying was more sudden. I also think that we’ve added a few really good personal touches to it. For example, we added in a part where my character, Lisa, stands up and throws a vase of water at Caroline’s character, Beth. This, in a way, fits in with a theme that we’ve had this semester that involves throwing things. It seems to be a favorite flare of ours to use. We also are doing a good job of balancing the scene. Although it is a dramatic, tense, mostly negative scene, a few of the things we are adding in add a comedic undertone to the scene overall. One such thing is the way Jen...

Scene Work Brainstorming

Lisa - naive - easily irritated -  trusting - self centered - defensive - well done makeup - hair down - casually formal clothes - expensive engagement ring - slim figure - 22 yo - in college - when she was young she and her sister would go up into their treehouse and play princesses and pretend to fall in love - her first date with her first boyfriend, who lasted a year. He was really sweet and was rich, but not gloating about it - on her 16 birthday her Friends all threw her a huge party where she met Dan - the day her dad left, at the age of 12 - when she and her sister had argued so badly that they didn’t speak for almost 2 weeks. This affected their current relationship - breaking up with her second boyfriend. It was really dramatic and ended in a shouting match in the school parking lot - right before: dress shopping with her best friend. Not successful, so it put her in a bad mood - finished meal with mom in awkward silence, then went back home for a...

The Caucasian Chalk Circle - An Interesting Take on Society’s Problems

The other night, on the 9th of November, 2017, I viewed the play The Caucasian Chalk Circle, written by Bertolt Brecht. It was also translated into English by this man. The play begins with two farming villages, the goat village and the fruit village, debating over who is best fit to have control of the valley. The fruit village has hired a famous Singer and a play to prove their point. The first of five closes with the introduction of the Singer. The rest of the scenes are showing the story that the Singer tells, called The Chalk Circle. This story is about a wealthy family with a baby boy named Michael. When the Governor (baby’s father) is killed, the town is thrown into chaos and the baby is left behind in the wife, Natela’s, haste to flee. She chose to save her dresses over her child. When a kind laundress named Grusha discovers the baby abandoned, she stays with it against her better judgement. Then, she takes it in herself when no one claims it. Over the course of the story, Gru...

Mask Video

https://youtu.be/gPGEeiZlR1c The mask video that I watched was called Familie Floz. It seems to be about four old men sitting on a park bench. They were creating rhythms with their canes. I liked it because it looked really funny to see the elderly men stomping their feet and banging their canes on the ground. Especially as they were looking around at each other, as if they were talking. It was interesting how the actors showed how the character was feeling through body movement. Such as when the men first started, the way the body moved made them appear confused and as they got more into it they also became less unsure.

Silent Movie Reflection

Over the course of the past couple of weeks, we worked on creating a silent movie. At first, our progress was a bit slow, but once we found a good idea to work with, we made some solid progress. We did well with choosing roles for each person that would match with their personality. Another thing we did well with was timing our actions to the music. I feel that the music that was playing seemed to match the mood of what was going on with the mood of the notes very well. I also feel that we did well with coming up with a good story line. Our plot was funny and it wasn’t confusing. One thing that we could have done better would’ve been actually following the schedule we set for ourselves. We had a tendency to get a bit distracted in class, so it took longer to create the movie than it should have. We also struggled a lot with the editing process. Since we did not know how to use iMovie, we had to figure the steps out as we went. Another thing I feel that I struggled with was making a smo...
